Parents, bring your children Inside
Parenting teens in the days of MySpaceÂ
For many months, his sister had no interest at all in MySpace. But all of a sudden, all her friends were building pages and she was desperate to get in on the act.
Unlike her brother, my Girl has less common sense and is much more gullible. I was more nervous about her having a page, but made the same agreement with her that I had with her brother. I have full access to her page, all the new comments come to my email, and I read her page daily. She hates that, but it’s the deal and she doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
I believed that following my kid’s pages so carefully would protect them from predators and perverts. I was wrong. MySpace does not have a vested interested in keeping their site safe. They will do little or nothing when you complain about harassment or a sexual deviant stalking your child Unfortunately, I learned this first hand.
One afternoon, several months ago, I was checking my email and saw that the Girl was getting email from a guy named Sonny. I’d never heard of him before, and so I did what I always do, went to her page and read his emails to her. They were shocking. It was immediately apparent that this wasn’t a ‘normal’ kid talking to her.
